Beneficial Management Practices for Forests

Avoid tree harvesting during bird nesting season (April-August)

Leave behind snags (standing dead trees), live trees with cavities, and coarse (fallen) woody material

Leave trees and vegetation around stream banks, lakes, and vernal pools

Improve climate resilience by thinning un-resilient species (e.g., balsam fir) and giving more light to existing resilient and regenerating trees (red maple, red oak, white pine)

Leave large trees for bats to roost

Leave some large trees to live out their full life span, provide a source of seeds, and die naturally (legacy trees)
